MUMBAI: With time running out on its plan to recover pending water bills from its domestic and commercial consumers, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has set the end of this month as the deadline for defaulters or get ready to face action.
The corporation has directed officials to cut connections, where bills have not been paid despite repeated requests, by the end of this month.
"I have asked our staff to get into an overdrive and terminate connections belonging to habitual defaulters by the end of this month. It is important for our financial health that we recover this amount as early as possible," said municipal commissioner Subodh Kumar.
The BMC has about Rs 500 cr yet to be recovered from domestic users while about Rs 390 cr are pending with government agencies such as Mhada, railways and MMRDA. Last year, the BMC started its amnesty scheme, Abhay Yojna, to speed up clearance of pending water bills.
